Sean Kennedy was initially unsure if he would make another record. Following the breakthrough popularity of his fourth album, Forever Us, and a string of singles upon signing with Rexius Records, he took a step back from making music. “I didn’t know what was next and it was terrifying,” Sean explains. “But soon, the songs started coming to me. This was a record I had to make.” The result is The Person in the Mirror; an exploration of self, heartbreak, and family. The record kicks off with “Eighteen”, a pop-rock ode to time long gone. But it’s the moments of true introspection that make The Person in the Mirror stand out. Kennedy grapples with change (“When I Was Young”) and passes down lessons (“Been There Too”), before accepting the past (“Goodbye to Yesterday”) and closing the door (“Rear View”). “Deep down I’m still the little boy who always drifted,” Sean confesses on “Autopsy”, a striking ballad where he puts himself under the microscope. The album’s closing track, “The Story of My Life”, is an homage to family legacy. Interspersed with voice recordings of family members and recollections of triumphs, Kennedy thanks the people who surround him. In its closing seconds, his grandmother can be heard, sending her love to the people no longer with them. The Person in the Mirror is available September 26th. Pre-Order here.
